Our Story: Why We’re Fighting for Wheatland County
Wheatland County is at a crossroads.
A foreign developer called Diode Ventures wants to pave over 576 acres of our best farmland — Tier 2 soil that’s been growing food for generations — and turn it into an industrial data centre. No end user has been named. There’s no clear plan for our water. And once that topsoil is scraped away, it never comes back.
This isn’t about being against progress. It’s about demanding the right process for decisions that will change our community forever.
We’re a group of neighbours — farmers, families, and small business owners — who came together when we realized nobody was asking the hard questions. This site is our way of making sure every resident of Wheatland County has the facts they need to speak up before it’s too late.
What’s at Stake
- Our farmland, lost forever. Once topsoil is removed and the land is industrialized, it doesn’t come back. That’s generations of food production gone for good.
- Too many questions, not enough answers. Groundwater, noise, traffic, road access, infrastructure impacts — residents are still waiting for clear, independent studies on all of it.
- Our families would carry the risk. Neighbouring homes, family farms, and horse operations like Infinity Equine could be affected for years — through construction, noise, dust, and beyond.
How We’re Approaching This
We believe in keeping things straightforward:
- Facts, not fear. We share what’s backed by documents and verified sources. When something isn’t known yet, we say so.
- Community comes first. Residents shouldn’t have to absorb long-term risk from a half-baked plan. Period.
- Accountability matters. Major land-use decisions deserve real scrutiny. Council needs to hear from the people who live here.
They’ve Been Stopped Before
Here’s something Diode Ventures doesn’t want you to know: they’ve been defeated twice before — by communities just like ours, using the same concerns we’re raising today.
- Peculiar, Missouri (2024): After two years of community opposition, the city council permanently banned Diode’s data centre zoning. The Washington Post covered it.
- Charles City, Virginia (2025): Facing overwhelming opposition over noise, water, and farmland loss, Diode withdrew and walked away. The New York Times covered it.
The pattern is clear: Diode proposes without an end user, submits incomplete studies, and counts on communities being too disorganized to fight back. But organized communities win. That’s what we’re building here.
What We’re Watching Right Now
- Transparency: Who’s the end user? Why won’t they come forward?
- Technical gaps: Are the water, noise, traffic, and infrastructure studies actually adequate — or were they rushed?
- Community impact: What does this really mean for our farms, our roads, our way of life?
